Avoid the Panic Pull: Overcoming Instinct in the Cockpit

Hi everyone! We hope you are having a great semester and restful quarantine. On behalf of flying exec, we know that this is a very stressful time for many people and we’re hoping that by setting up virtual activities like hangartalks and hangarchats we can bring our local aviation community together.

On that note, we would like to announce the first hangartalk of the semester from our very own Greg Gilmer, an airline pilot and GRA on MIT’s campus! Below is a description of the event.

When? October 13th, 6pm EST

What? Avoid the Panic Pull: Overcoming Instinct in the Cockpit

The “panic pull” is an extremely common reflex among pilots that almost invariably ends in tragedy. In this discussion we will examine a pilot’s mishap caught on camera that gives us a rare opportunity to break down a panic pull reaction that did not lead to a fatal accident. Come join us to learn more as we examine the video and the pilot’s actions, talk about the underlying aerodynamics, and learn what we can do to avoid finding ourselves in a similar situation.

Where? Your desk, dinner table, bed, chair, floor, literally anywhere

How? Use this zoom link https://mit.zoom.us/j/93361919760 (it will be sent again closer to the date)

Additionally, we have created a discord for the club so we can all correspond more easily. We saw a lot of activity on a flying-pilots email thread and loved the interaction so we’re hoping this will make these discussions more natural rather than sending emails all the time! The discord can be found here: https://discord.gg/msdj3cW

Hope to talk to all of you on the discord and see you at the hangartalk! As always, if you have any questions or suggestions please email flying-exec@mit.edu.
